Labiaplasty, or surgical correction of the female labia, is a relatively new procedure in aesthetic surgery in Poland. Historically known for a long time - mentions of similar treatments have already occurred in ancient Egypt, and to this day labioplasty is sometimes confused with "feminine circumcision", used for years in some cultures for religious reasons. It may seem that surrender to this treatment is a kind of whim of a woman applying to a plastic surgeon, but it should be remembered that besides the unmistakable aesthetic effect that improves the patient's self-assessment, such a procedure brings with it a number of purely functional advantages, referred to in further part of the text.

Labiaplasty

To make it easier to get used to the procedure, it is worth looking first at the anatomy of some of the female external sexual organs that will be discussed when describing the same procedure of labioplasty:

  • pubic mound - it is usually pubic skin covered with pubic symphysis
  • greater labia (labia major) - hairy, soft skin folds that close the entrance to the vulva
  • lower labia (labia minora) - appear after the labia of the larger labia, and cover the urethral orifice and enter the vagina
  • clitoris - skin fold in the upper pole of the connection of the labia majora, it is the equivalent of the penis in men.

Too large, unsightly-looking labia lesions, or larger labia, which have lost their fill due to aging or rapid weight loss, may be a nuisance for patients. Plastic surgery clinics come to help, which more and more often successfully perform aesthetic and repair labioplasty, improving the quality of life of patients.

Labiaplasty - benefits

The benefits of the treatment can be properly divided into two groups: functional and aesthetic. The hypertrophy of the labia is multifactorial: it can be conditioned by genetic factors, the use of androgenic hormones, frequent infections of the vulva area. The deformity of the labia is common in multiparous women, when births were carried out by the forces of nature - then not only may their elasticity be lost, but also the break in continuity due to mechanical damage or abnormal healing after sewing the crotch.

Many patients with labile hypertrophy complain of discomfort during intercourse, not only due to the fact that the large labia can be a mechanical obstacle, but also with a growing sense of shame in front of the partner. Patients with such a condition may also have difficulty in maintaining intimate hygiene, a tendency to frequent irritation and bacterial and fungal infections, as well as problems with sitting, running, cycling or other types of sport.

As for the labia larger, injection with hyaluronic acid allows you to regain the original fill, lost due to the natural aging process, pregnancy or sudden weight loss.

As you can see, labioplasty helps to solve not only aesthetic problems, but undoubtedly they are as important as functional ones - because our health also consists of a good mood in the sphere of the psyche.

Indications for the procedure

Indications for the procedure Labiaplasty can be various and include:

  • loss of filling and volume of the labia majora, which in the opinion of the patient is not aesthetic
  • hypertrophy (hypertrophy) of the labia smaller / larger, making it difficult for the patient to function daily - sexual intercourse, sports, hygiene
  • recurrent vulval infections related causally to labia hypertrophy
  • frequent injuries, chafes and abrasions of intimate places
  • the desire to improve the appearance of the vulva by reducing the labia smaller, eg after delivery
  • improvement of partner relations, increase of libido

Contraindications for the procedure

As the procedure usually takes place under local anesthesia and the operating field is small, the list of contraindications to the procedure is rather short and intuitive, and it should be mentioned above all about:

  • active infection of the vulva to avoid the spread of infection
  • ongoing menstruation
  • poorly controlled diabetes and nicotineism, as both these factors adversely affect post-operative wound healing
  • unrealistic expectations of the patient regarding the final effect of the treatment
  • bliznowcu

Before the surgery

Before the surgery, there is always a medical consultation, aimed at discussing the patient's expectations as to the final effect. So think about what you expect from your surgeon. It is worth being aware that, despite the small size of the surgery, also labioplasty - whether in the form of injections of the labia larger hyaluronic acid, or a change in the shape of the labia smaller surgically - carries the risk of complications. Tell your doctor about all your medicines, illnesses and allergies. It is necessary to depilate the intimate surroundings.

Type of anesthesia

Anesthesia for any surgical procedure generally depends on the extent of the planned surgery, but may be:

  • general - during this type of anesthesia pain, reflexes and patient's awareness are suppressed. General premedication requires proper premedication - administration of substances that will reduce anxiety and fear of surgery, inhibit the secretion of saliva and bronchial content, cause retrograde amnesia, and also enable reducing the doses required for proper anesthesia.
  • wired - anesthesia is given to interrupt the conduction in the sensory nerves, the patient has abolished pain and reflexes but is aware of the course of the operation
  • local - when the anesthetic is used to justify the operated area

Temporary local anesthesia is used for the surgery of the labioplasty - the area of the cut is injected with a mixture of lignocaine (anesthetic), adrenaline (adrenaline has a vasoconstrictor effect and thus reduces bleeding) and saline (to decongest the tissues and facilitate the surgeon's cutting).

How does the procedure work?

The patient is placed on the operating table in a gynecological position. The surgical field is thoroughly washed several times with a disinfectant solution for the skin and mucous membranes, and then draws cutting lines depending on the technique which will be discussed below.

A mixture of lignocaine with anesthetic effect, adrenaline to constrict the vessel and saline, which facilitates the surgeon's stratification, is administered along the cutting line.

The labia of the labia smaller can be done by several different techniques. The most commonly used are:

  • classical technique ("samurai cut") - is the simplest of techniques - involves cutting off excess lip tissues, which are most often discolored and uneven, along their course from the clitoris to the lower seam. The disadvantage is an oblong scar on the edge of both lips.
  • wedge technique - consists in cutting out of the labia lesions smaller after a fragment of triangular tissues, then the edges of the wound are brought closer together by means of a seam. This technique is used least frequently.
  • fenestration technique - the most difficult one, but also giving the best cosmetic results without visible scars and cavity in the unrolled - consists in cutting out the bigger types of "windows" on the surface of both labia, removing the excess of lip tissue and saving the blooded and innervated central part.

The labia of the labia majora can be performed in a similar way, planning the cut line in a standing and lying position to optimally determine the amount of skin to be cut. Similar to the lesion labia, the surgical field is injected with a mixture of anesthesia, and the excess skin is removed, after which the crotch can be supplemented with an injection of hyaluronic acid.

Time and course of convalescence

The patient usually goes home the day after the procedure. In the first days, slight swelling may persist. He can come back to work after 3-4 days, unless it is a physical job. After the surgery, the sutures are removed between 7 and 10 days after surgery, then wait until the wound heals completely. During this time, care should be taken to ensure the hygiene of the wound, clean the crotch area freely with a mild intimate hygiene and use a local disinfectant, eg Octenisept. Do not wear tight underwear made of synthetic materials, ride a bike or do other sports. Sexual abstinence is recommended for about a month after the procedure.

Effects after surgery

The labia of the labia smaller and larger allow for a satisfactory cosmetic and functional effect. The cosmetic effect that we want to get is pre-determined with the doctor, but certainly after such treatment we can expect the removal of excess skin lips and improve everyday functioning.

Recommendations after the procedure

  • maintaining proper hygiene of the wound by using mild fluids for intimate hygiene and local disinfectants
  • removal of sutures between 7 and 10 days after surgery
  • surgical control for about a month after the surgery
  • airing the crotch, avoiding tight, synthetic underwear
  • prohibition of intercourse and sport for a month, especially causing pressure on the operated place (horseback riding, cycling)

How long do the effects last after the treatment last?

The effect after the labioplasty procedure can be considered as permanent. If the healing process and convalescence is going well, reoperation is not necessary and the effects are satisfactory.

How to avoid complications after the procedure?

  • do not engage in sports or sex for a month after the procedure
  • check that there is no swelling, redness, cloudy mucus at the cut site
  • follow the recommendations for postoperative wound hygiene
  • contact your doctor if you experience any general symptoms: fever, chills, nausea and vomiting
  • use a proper diet - avoid high blood sugar levels, because it delays the healing process and promotes the development of candidiasis
  • do not smoke, because, like high blood glucose levels, it impedes healing

Possible complications after the procedure

Like any surgical procedure, labioplasty carries a risk of complications, although they are extremely rare. Include postoperative wound infection, prolonged healing, emergence of a flower, abscess, necrosis or granulomas.

Recommended additional treatments after the procedure

A preferred procedure to complement the surgical labia of the labia majora is to inject the lips with hyaluronic acid to increase their filling and general revitalization, as the skin also loses its firmness in the intimate surroundings with age. The procedure of filling the labia with the major hyaluronic acid is performed under local anesthesia and lasts about 30 minutes, although not every patient can be proposed, and contraindications are similar as in the case of surgical intervention: no active vaginal infection, menstruation, pregnancy, healing disorders .

After a self-performed procedure for filling the labia with the larger hyaluronic acid, avoid intercourse, practice sports and tight clothing for 10 days after the procedure.
